Malaysia Hall Sydney

Malaysia Hall Sydney (MHS), a Malaysian students’ accommodation hall located at 2A Alison Road, Randwick NSW 2013, was originally a motel called ‘Randwick House Motel’. The Malaysian government purchased the building on the 20th of June 1975. The Director of Malaysian Students Department Australia (MSDA) at the time was Mr. Shah Abu Mansor.

The Malaysian Government chose this building due to its strategic location to many educational institutions such as technical colleges of Randwick (TAFE Randwick), the University of New South Wales, schools and not to mention its easy access to public transportation where you could simply catch busses that would take you to city and many other parts of Sydney from the bus stops located just right in front of the gate.

The opening ceremony of Malaysia Hall Sydney was held on Friday 28 May  1976 by His Excellency Dr. Awang Hassan, the Malaysian High Commissioner for Australia at the time. Its first appointed warden waEs Mr. Lim Kok Choo and was assisted for night shift by Mr. Terrence Teh.

Record shows that the first registered Malaysia Hall resident was Mr. Anuar Kassim, who at the time was undertaking engineering course at the University of Western Australia in Perth. He stayed as a temporary resident  on 19 December 1975.

At the time, MHS was open to Malaysian students and non-students (Malaysian citizen). For non-students, there are special conditions that would qualify them to stay at MHS. Mr Lim Kok Choo returned to Malaysia by the end of October 1978 after three years of service, and he was replaced by Mr Hamdan bin Abu Samah, who came on December 25, 1978.
